Stories and the narrative explorer

Walk a possible world: pick an answer to each open Question and watch which combinations survive.

A story is a neighbourhood, not a folder

A story here is a Question and the Questions it constrains — the group the ranker had to enumerate together because a choice in one restricts the others. The page says so: “Nothing here is inside this story; a story is a path through the graph, not a folder.”

Why Every other news product decides what belongs to a story, and that decision is usually the thing being argued about. Here the grouping falls out of the structure — two Questions are in one story because the model literally cannot answer them independently.

Connects It is why nothing on this site has a hierarchical address, and why the same claim can matter to several stories without being filed in any.

A derived title and a cast

Stories are titled from their dominant entity and event — “Andromeda yacht — Who was responsible for the Nord Stream sabotage?” — and carry a cast strip of the entities that appear most, with their appearance counts.

Why The title is mechanical on purpose. A hand-written headline would be the one editorial voice on a site with none, and it would inevitably start summarising the answer.

How much of this rests on one source

A fog gauge on the story: how many of its claims rest on a single source or none — 17 of 25 — alongside its clock strip of dated events.

Why It is the single most useful summary of a story’s epistemic state, and one no publication offers about its own coverage. A story that is mostly single-sourced is a different object from one that is not, however confident the individual sentences sound.

Connects The story also carries its own slice of the change log, so “what has happened in this story lately” is a question with an answer. The same fog measure drives the front page’s fog watch.

The ranked possible worlds

For each story, the enumerated combinations of answers, ranked, each showing what it picks in every Question — including the ones it leaves open.

Why This is where competing answers become competing accounts. A branch at 21% is a number; a version of events that says this happened, at this time, therefore not that — is something you can actually think about.

Connects Each world links into the explorer with its choices preselected, so a ranking is always one click from being walked.

Every choice is a link

In the explorer, choosing a branch is following an ordinary link; the server re-renders the whole world from the URL. With JavaScript on, the same controls re-filter instantly. With it off, everything still works.

Why The most interactive thing on this site is built as hypertext first. That is not nostalgia: it is what makes a possible world addressable, shareable, crawlable and archivable rather than a state trapped in someone’s browser tab.

Connects It is the shadow-layer rule at its hardest case — and the case that proves the rule is not a slogan.

“Leave this open” is one of the options

Every Question in the explorer offers leave this open — the model does not know, carrying its unknown share, and the fully agnostic world is often the top-ranked one.

Why A world-builder that forces a choice on every Question would make “I don’t know” unrepresentable — and unrepresentable is how honest uncertainty disappears from an interface. Here it is a first-class selection, and the page says it is often the right one.

Connects It is the residual bar again, in the one place where a reader is actively constructing a story.

Impossible combinations are explained, not blocked

Choose two branches that cannot both hold and the page says so — naming the reason and both claims — then renders the world anyway: “The world is still rendered below, because seeing why a version of events fails is worth more than being prevented from asking.”

Why Blocking the click would teach nothing and would look like the machine refusing to consider something. Explaining the impossibility, in words, with both claims linked, teaches exactly what the constraint is and lets you disagree with it.

And the way out is offered

Each impossible option carries a link that switches the conflicting choice off rather than pretending both can hold.

Why The alternative — leaving the reader to work out which of their selections to undo — turns a teaching moment into a puzzle about the interface.

Connects Because every state is a URL, undoing a choice is just another address.

A possible world is a URL

“Nothing is saved: a world is a selection, and the address bar is where it lives. Copy the URL and you have shared this exact version.” The same link renders the same world for anyone, and the page tells you where it sits in the ranking — or that it is not among the ranked worlds at all.

Why It makes a version of events quotable without making it official. You can send someone the account you think is right, and they receive it with all its rivals, its shares and its residual attached.

Connects Nothing is stored, so there is no account, no saved state and nothing about you to keep.

What this version asserts

Below the picker, the world assembles: every claim the selection commits you to, with the evidence and challenges that come with each.

Why It closes the loop between a set of choices and their consequences. Picking a branch is easy; reading the twelve things it obliges you to also believe is the part that changes minds.

Even the API refuses to tidy a world

The world endpoint returns the excluded branches and the violated constraints along with the chosen claims.

Why An API that returned only what a world asserts would quietly convert a selection among rivals into a set of facts — the exact transformation this whole site exists to prevent, performed at the one layer nobody reads.

Connects It is the same rule as the residual travelling into every twin and card: the awkward part goes with the number, always.
